This program updates the computer registry to enable the autoplay feature of the CD player/CDROM drive. This update is only necessary if, when you try to autostart a CD, the name of the CD appears below the G: (CDROM) drive icon in the "My Computer" window, but the custom icon will not load and the CD will not autostart. This issue may occur if another software application has changed the registry and removed this option.NOTE: It is not necessary to install this utility if your CD autoplay function is working properly.

Download and Installation Instructions

  1. 1. To determine if your autoplay feature is working, first make sure that autoplay is enabled then check to see if it works. To do this, do the following:
    1. Open the Control Panel.
    2. Select and open the "System" icon.
    3. Click on the Device Manager tab.
    4. Highlight and double-click on the CDROM category. A line should appear below this line describing the CDROM type.
    5. Highlight this second line.
    6. Click on the Properties button in the lower left corner of Device Manager.
    7. Click on the Settings tab.
    8. Check to see if the "Auto insert notification" option is checked.
    9. If it is not checked, place a checkmark in the option box and restart the computer when prompted to do so.
    10. Place a CD equipped with Autoplay, such as Mechwarrior or Encarta, into the CD-ROM drive and see if the CD starts by itself. When the registry has been changed, the name of the CD will appear below the G: drive in the My Computer window, but the custom icon will not load and the CD will not Autoplay.
    11. If your computer starts the CD automatically, there is no need to continue with this update as the computer is working properly.
  2. Download the CDNOAUTO.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  3. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the CDNOAUTO.EXE file to begin the installation. The file will self-extract into a text instruction file containing essentially the same instructions found here, and CDNoAuto.reg, the patch file.
  4. Close the DOS window and double-click on CDNoAuto.reg. This file will execute. A Registry Editor message will appear confirming that information has been successfully entered into the registry.
  5. Click on OK to close the message.
  6. You may wish to save the file CDNoAuto.exe on a floppy disk in case you should need to use it again.
