This application note describes how to install the audio driver for HD audio controllers in VIA South Bridges VT8237A, VT8251, CX700(M/M2), and HD audio codec VT1708. A second option is also explained - to patch the VIA HD Audio Driver for Debian 4.0r0, Fedora Core 6, Mandriva 2007.1, OpenSuSE 10.2, Ubuntu Desktop 6.10/7.04 and kernel 2.6.19-rc6. Step-by-step instructions for each method and a comparison of their respective features are provided.

In this section, it teaches users how to install the driver in Debian 3.1r4 (2.6 kernel), Fedora Core 5, Mandriva 2006.0/2007.0 and Red Flag 5 Linux and how to patch the driver into Fedora Core 6, OpenSuSE 10.2, Ubuntu Desktop 6.10 and kernel 2.6.19-rc6. Before installing or patching the HD audio driver, please make sure the kernel-devel RPM packages in Fedora series and kernel-source RPM packages in Mandriva and OpenSuSE series have been installed. For Mandriva 2006.0/2007.0, users need to remove directory “/lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/sound/core” first.
